Free Migration is a collaborative project that supports the concept of free migration in an original way. Originally designed to celebrate the migration of monarch butterflies (North America) and “rondone” (Europe and Africa). The first piece consisted of ten sheets of handmade paper. Each sheet contained embedded images on both sides. The collaborators were myself, Mexican master papermaker Alberto Velazquez, and his two assistants. A later stage of the project will include other animals.
I am expanding Free Migration to include human migrants. Because of the coronavirus, it is not currently possible to make this stage of the project collaborative; I hope this soon changes. My focus at this time is on the “boat people” of Asia, the Caribbean, and Africa. At this point, the images are a product of computer work and work by hand. One sample is included here. There will be more.
La Migración Libre es un proyecto colaborativo que apoya al concepto de la migración libre en una manera original. Celebra la migración de las mariposas monarcas (Norteamérica) y los “rondoni” (Europa y Africa). La obra cuenta con diez hojas de papel fabricado a mano. Cada hoja contiene imágenes integradas en ambos lados. Los colaboradores eran yo mismo, maestro mexicano Alberto Velazquez–experto en la fabricación de papel–y sus dos ayudantes. Se venderán las hojas para continuar la colaboración de artistas en ambos lados de la frontera estadounidense–mexicano.
Estoy ampliando La Migración Libre para incluir a los migrantes humanos. Debido al coronavirus, actualmente no es posible hacer colaborativa esta etapa del proyecto; espero que esto cambie pronto. Mi enfoque en este momento está en la “gente de los barcos” de Asia, el Caribe y África. En este momento, las imágenes son producto del trabajo por computadora y trabajo a mano. Aquí se incluye una muestra. Habrá más.

During a period of over forty years, students and I completed various Education Projects. As a teacher, I always tried to emphasize the relationship between language and art. Here is a gallery of images from numerous projects. Also included is a sample of my unpublished coloring book for teaching adult literacy.
